PAIGE

Kai’s fingers softly massaged my shoulders, distracting me from the deck that Elaina was shuffling. “Sit,” I told him, nodding to the chair next to mine.

My chest thumped in anticipation. I was raised not believing in any of this stuff, but when I went away to college I connected with my soul and learned about my guides and angels. My life changed the night I went into Coral’s shop. The beautiful medium connected with my late grandmother, as well as my grandfather whom I never knew. I became a true believer then.

Elaina waved a bundle of smoking sage around the room, removing negative energy from the space. Kai coughed and scrunched his nose in the same adorable way he did whenever I burn sage.

“Paige, I want you to hold the cards. Put your energy into them. Silently ask your guides to tell to which five cards to pick that will communicate what is happening in your life and what they wish to tell you.”

She placed the deck in my hands. The backs of the cards were beautiful, adorned with symbols and silver and gold foil. I took a deep breath and focused on hearing my angels. I moved the cards through my hands. Feeling a warm sensation, I picked the first, laying it face down. Another gave me chills, then the next flew out on its own. I chose two more until five sat between us on the table.

“Very good. You have powerful souls around you.” Elaina reached her hand over mine. “Ready?”

“Yes.” I swelled and watched as Kai squirmed unconformably in his seat.

“This first card represents your current situation.” She flipped it over. The image showed a girl who looked to be crying in bed with nine long blades in the background. “Nine of Swords. This card indicates sleepless nights. Dwelling on regrets, negative racing thoughts, doubts about your future. Paige, have you been experiencing anxiety?”

I couldn’t say yes, because my mouth seemed to have stopped working. I just nodded as the hairs on my arm sprung.

“This next card indicates the influences that surround this situation. It depicts what’s causing you pain and worry.” Elaina flipped over the next card. “Five of Wands.”

A beautiful girl stood in the center, a blindfold covering her eyes. She held a single wand in front of her. Sets of hands, each with their own wands that crossed hers, blocking her.

“The girl in the center is you,” Elaina continued. “You’re conflicted by a competition. You can’t see who you should follow. The battle between these two people is keeping you from moving forward. Constant conflicts are arising with clashing egos. The blindfold represents your attempt to hide from the battle, even though you’re in the middle of it. Is this making sense?” Elaina asked as her hand moved over the next card. I gave her a quick nod.

“This next card represents challenges at the center of your current path.” The card showed a king sitting on his throne with a giant sword by his side.
